Bio of the authors
My name is Md. Isfaq Ahmed Pathan Saad. I am 11 years old. I am in 5th grade at Abdul Kadir Molla International School. I am always staying proactive in my work and I ventured into a lot of different activities to show my skill in my work. My goal is to gain a better understanding of SDGs or sustainable development goals. Currently, I am learning about Climate action and I am taking action against climate change. I wrote this article to persuade you to take action against it.
My name is Raiyan Rahaman Seaim. I am twelve years old. I am from Abdul Kadir Molla International School. I want to be a scientist who will create different things which will make nature sustainable and make people’s dreams come true and bring happiness to your life.
The probable age of our Earth is 4.54 billion years. It has been rich in natural resources and beauty since the beginning of its creation. A radical change has taken place in our world to meet the changes of time and human needs. Climate change on Earth is one such example that is currently being observed especially through our multifaceted activities over a long period of time. Climate change is one of the most thought-provoking and current issues affecting the lives of every living thing on earth.
Climate change:
Climate change is a protracted-term shift of global weather formations and temperatures. With these changes in global weather formations, people worldwide face many problems such as additionally frequent floods, droughts, hurricanes, rising global temperature, sea levels, etc. In a word, Climate change is the long-term shift where humans have contributed to the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses into the air. By these activities global temperatures are rising which results in long-term changes to the climate. We see the temperature rising every year and our nature is not working according to its seasons but showing the characteristics of different seasons.
Causes of climate change:
There are two major causes of climate change. One is man-made and another one is natural. Of these two, man-made causes are occurring the most. In their daily activities, they are affecting nature the most by throwing trash here and there, throwing plastics into the water, burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees, smoking, melting pitch, etc. Burning fossil fuels produces energy, but also releases greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous monoxide into the air.
Natural causes are affecting the world naturally. They don’t occur frequently. The natural causes are volcanic eruption, solar variation and earth orbital changes, and ocean currents. This natural cause doesn’t happen frequently but when it occurs it creates a significant concern.
Outputs of climate change:
Climate change causes greenhouse effects. Carbon footprints are responsible for climate change. It means our activities by which the use of carbon , methane or greenhouse gasses increases. When greenhouse gasses build-up in the atmosphere, they act as a layer around the earth. Over time these harmful gasses have a huge quantity which impacts negatively in the atmosphere. When sunlight hits this layer, it passes straight through and continues until it reaches the surface of the planet.
The earth then absorbs this sunlight and emits a different type of light, longer-wave infrared radiation, back out to space. As it leaves the atmosphere, infrared radiation also hits the greenhouse gas layer. Most of it goes straight through, but some of it is absorbed and goes back down to earth. This traps the infrared radiation and causes the surface to heat – a process we call the ‘greenhouse effect.
Without a layer of greenhouse gasses trapped in heat, the temperature would be bitterly cold, and humans would be unable to survive. However, by adding extra greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, humans have created an enhanced greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse gas layer is now thicker and is absorbing more infrared radiation than before. In other words, the greenhouse effect is stronger and, instead of keeping the earth at a stable temperature, it is causing the planet to heat up.
Impacts of climate change
Human activity has a range of impacts on the climate system, ecosystems, and people.
Changes to the climate system include:
Rising ocean levels – Increasing temperatures that causes glaciers and ice sheets to melt, raising more water to the oceans, and causing the ocean level to rise.
Ocean acidification – Ocean acidification mainly occurred for carbon dioxide gas. Which makes the ocean acidic and kills marine animals. It hampers the chemical balance of the ocean.
Extreme weather events – Climate change is causing many extreme weather events to become more intense and frequent, such as heatwaves, droughts, and floods.
Flooding of coastal regions – Coastal cities is at risk of flooding as sea levels continue to rise.
Food insecurity – High temperatures, extreme weather events, flooding, and droughts can damage farmland. This makes it difficult for farmers to grow crops and means that their yield of crops each year is uncertain.
Conflict and climate migrants – Climate change is a stress multiplier – it can take existing problems, such as lack of food or shelter, and make them worse. This can cause people to fight over resources (food, water, and shelter), or to migrate.
Damage to marine ecosystems – Rising ocean temperatures is very risky for the environment because it can be the reason of excessive rainfall and other disasters, by ocean acidification the chemical balance is changing which is alarming , and ocean anoxia (lack of oxygen) are damaging to marine life by which fishes are dying, other species under water is getting extinct.
Our responsibilities to make the climate sustainable for human:
There are several ways we can stop global warming. First, gather as much knowledge as we can about climate change before taking actions. This knowledge will help us to take action. Become responsible. And then take action with a group. And when people see us taking action they will be motivated and they will also want to join us and take action. And that will be the greatest opportunity to make the climate sustainable.
Our own initiatives or actions:
There are many ways to take action against climate change and while taking the actions start from the action we can take. We need to start from our level of actions. There are many actions that can change our world and they are easy to do like:
● Plant one tree every week
● Making a rooftop garden and inspiring others also to make it.
● Try hard to live plastic-free.
● Avoid pollution.
● Try to save energy.
● Using renewable energies.
● Growing our own produce.
● Using reusable products.
● Follow three RRR ( Reuse, Reduce, Recycle).
● Make a habit of not throwing trash here and there.
● Use Eco-Friendly things.
● Use a Chothe Bag.
● Use Electric Transportation like Car, Train, etc.
● Donate used or unused items that we don’t need.
● Turn off electrical appliances when we are not in the room.
● Walk or cycle for a shorter distance minted using a car
● Use Green Transport.
● Never try to waste food, we can give it to poor people or street cats and dogs and if we can’t do any of them then we can make compost and give it to plants.
We can also make contact with any organization related to this or can even make our team and start working towards our goal. And one day we might achieve our goal in the future.
Reasons for taking actions:
We need to take necessary steps which are our actions, because there is no time to delay planning and making big projects. Rather, we need to start working immediately individually and into community with all. We can do further research and gather information ,find out the ways to control our climate and save earth from different natural calamities. We need to find out the reason by which our mother planet is getting destroyed and how we -human beings are destroying it and disturbing the whole solar system. We can conduct surveys in our local area and check every opinion on the effects of climate change. We should provoke everyone to take actions from their points and also spread awareness among others.
Our starting points to make the climate sustainable for human:
We need to always be hopeful and have the belief that we can change the situation and make our world a healthy place to live in . There is still some time until we can make the climate sustainable. We just need to take responsible actions such as:
● Raise our voices.
● Spread awareness globally by using different social media.
● Avoid all kinds of pollution.
● Inspire other people to take action.
● Make contact with any organization who are involved with climate change.
And many other responsible actions we can take to make the climate sustainable. And always stay away from those kinds of activities which affect our climate.
Benefits of taking actions:
By taking action we can get benefits meanwhile our mother planet earth and our next generation is also getting benefits. HOW? That’s an easy answer. Because while taking action you are taking the steps of sustainability. And if the climate becomes sustainable then you might face fewer floods, droughts, tsunamis, or other problems which will save thousands of innocent lives and save billions of dollars of property. And our world will be problem-free which will make us tension free. And your next generation can also live without risking their lives for disaster or any other problems.
See we are human beings and we are living on the only liveable planet in our whole solar system and if this planet is destroyed then we will not have any other choice instead of dying for nothing. So we must take actions to make our mother planet a better place to live, to live happily, to live without risking our lives, to live without any problems, to live without wearing masks, to live without pollution. We can make the necessary arrangements to make our beloved earth last longer and make it an absolute planet for us to be the only habitat for all living things for a long period of time.
