The European Commission has proposed to establish temporary restrictive measures on short-stay visas against applicants who are citizens of Bangladesh, Iraq, and The Gambia.
Such a proposal was made last month after the three countries had insufficient cooperation with the European Union Member States in terms of readmission of illegal migrants to the EU who are Bangladeshis, Iraqis or Gambians, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to a press release issued by the EU Commission, it has been revealed that in line with the revised Visa Code, which has been in force since February 2020, the short-stay visa policy of the EU is closely linked to cooperation with partner countries outside the EU. This means that the EU requires each third country to readmit their nationals who do not have the right to stay within its territory.
The same has announced that through this proposal, the Commission aims to improve the cooperation between the three countries and the Member States regarding the readmission of their own citizens.
“The proposals adopted aim to improve the three countries’ cooperation with the Member States on readmission. Effective return and readmission, as well as sustainable reintegration, are essential elements of comprehensive, balanced, tailor-made and mutually beneficial migration partnerships with countries outside the EU,” the EU Commission’s statement on the proposal reads.
Furthermore, it has been emphasised that taking into account subsequent developments, the cooperation level on readmission with Bangladesh, Iraq, and the Gambia must be improved.
Consequently, the proposed measures by the Commission cover specific procedural matters for issuing short-visas, more specifically as follows:
Nonetheless, it has been emphasised that the proposed measures do not apply to applicants who are family members of EU citizens or other persons who are permitted free movement in the EU.
Now the European Council has to examine the proposal made by the Commission and take a decision regarding its adoption. The measures will start being effective as soon as the proposal is approved.
“To maintain a transparent and constructive partnership approach, which encourages rapid progress on readmission, the Commission will continue its engagement with the countries concerned to improve cooperation and overall relations with these countries,” the Commission added.
