The first Qiraat Competition at Poplar Mosque

Syed Abdul Qadir : On 23 December 2018, Poplar Mosque & Community Centre hosted it’s first Qiraat competition. Over 75 young children from the ages of 6-19 had taken part in the competition on Sunday. They were shortlisted from the first round into the quarter finals to 36 and then shortlisted further onto semi finals to 18. Thereafter, the semi finalists were shortlisted to 11 and began to prepare for the finals on the 26th December.
The finalists were categorised into 3 groups; the Junior with a total of 5 contestants, the Mid-junior group with a total of 3 contestants and the
Senior group which consisted of 3 contestants.
From the junior group, Rafsan Sikder was awarded with first prize, 2nd came Tawheed Rahman, 3rd Dawud Hussain, 4th Hamza Ali and finally Aiza Salahuddin. From the Mid-Junior group: Md. Abdullah was awarded with 1st prize, 2nd place came Mahir Choudhury and 3rd Muhammad Abdurrahman. As for the Senior group: Uthman Abou Bakar was awarded 1st Prize by the judges, thereafter 2nd place came Humaira Yasmin and 3rd place came Abrar shaikh. The children were awarded with great prizes as an appreciation and a reward for reciting so beautifully. As a result many children were encouraged and mesmerised by the beauty of their recitation.
Approximately more than two hundred people were present at the finals of the Qiraat competition; 75 contestants, along with their parents, and local residents and scholars were present at the event. By hosting such an amazing event, PMCC aims to encourage the young children to come to the Mosque environment and learn the book of Allah using it as a guidance for the rest of their lives. The world renowned recitor, Qari Hazza Al Balushi was also present at the Qiraat Competition as the chief guest and alongside with him Shaykh Akhtar Hussain, the hifdh teacher of Imam Hafizur Rahman.
Before the Qiraat Competition finals, PMCC was honoured with the presence of Mufti Khalidul Haque, former Imam of PMCC and lecturer of the well-known institute Ebrahim College. He delivered a lecture on the importance of holding onto the Qur’an. Thereafter, the great muhaddith Shaykh Akram Nadwi of Oxford, delivered a powerful lecture on the embodiment of Quranic teaching in our homes.
The program was organised by Ustaadh Hafizur Rahman Imam of the Poplar Mosque & Community Centre with the support of many volunteers as well his colleagues; Imam Shofiul Islam and Maulana Ziaur Rahman, the muadhhin of PMCC, and the management committee of the Poplar Mosque & Community Centre. The event was sponsored by Bismillah Hajj and Umrah and Sakeenah Tours.
